   Course Information, Fall 2007

Course Description:    College Algebra.  3 hrs.  Polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions.  Graphs, systems of equations and inequalities, sequences.  (PR:  Math ACT 21 or above)

Course Objectives: 

  • To provide a thorough understanding of algebra
  • To prepare students for calculus and statistics courses
  • To satisfy the general studies requirement in the field of mathematics

Required Materials:   
College Algebra -- Graphs & Models (Third Edition).  Bittinger, Beecher, Ellenbogen, Penna.  Pearson/Addison-Wesley/Longman. 2006.

Grading Policy:    Grades will be figured on a percentage basis with quizzes counted together as one exam grade.  There will be three chapter exams, plus a final exam. The final exam counts as a double exam.  Quizzes will be given every day.  No excuses are accepted for missed quizzes, but the lowest 4 daily grades will be dropped.   In the event that less than 4 quizzes are missed, the lowest 4 quiz scores will be dropped.

                                            90 - 100% =  A
                                            80 - 89 %  =  B
                                            70 - 79%   =  C
                                            60 - 69%   =  D
                                            0 - 59 %    =  F

Attendance Policy:    Attendance will be taken daily by quizzes and exams.  Borderline grades will be determined by class attendance.

Exams:    Tests will be given as scheduled in the syllabus.  If it is necessary to change the date of an exam, two day's notification will be given.  If you are unable to take an exam due to unavoidable circumstances (e.g. illness, death in the family, accidents, institutional activities), you must contact me prior to the exam time and furnish written verification of the excuse in order to take a make-up test.

Important Dates:   The last day to register is Friday, August 24.  The last day to drop an individual course is Friday, October 26.  The last day to withdraw from the university is Tuesday, December 4.
