for next week: refine artist statement, bring five questions about readings and begin creating a plan for position paper:

Pick an art topic that you feel compelled to explore -- kitsch for example. From there, you'll choose a position to take on that topic (i.e., kitsch is necessary, or not necessary, or there's no such thing as kitsch). Then convince us of this. Persuade us to take your opinion. Not just through your own opinions, but through academic research and well-thought and insightful conclusions. For next Friday have an idea as to what you want to explore and what position you plan to take, and how you intend to make your point. Where will you find your supporting data and materials? Will you use journals, books, videos, interviews, specific art works? How will you contrast and compare the issues. Nothing is required to be written yet, but be prepared to at least answer these questions. I will help you find the resources you need to explore your hypotheses next Friday.
