Just a few pics from the basic removal
Here the trans out of the car and all cleaned up. The previous owner said he had replaced the trans already and the yellow junkyard paint on the case backs him up.
There's the problem my front band was shot. I also discovered that the junkyard trans that was in my van came out of a TBI car so it had the weaker 3 disk clutch packs.
I ended up hitting the junkyards and found a turbo trans to use for parts. The drums in the front are out of a turbo trans and have 4 clutches in them and in the back are 3 clutch TBI drums. You can see how much higher up the snap ring is on the turbo parts. I also scored a good front band out of the parts trans.
Thats where I drilled a hole in the case so I could adjust the line pressure without having to remove the pan.
The differential
The t-trac lsd that is going into the differential and the diff pin retainers that will hopefully keep the pin from flyout through the side of the tran's case.
Getting the roll pin out that holds the diff pin in was a pain.
Back together and with a new diff pin and the improved retainers. I just left the roll pin out since I don't really need it anymore. This way the diff pin can rotate and wear more evenly or at least I hope thats what happens.
Not a very hard job and I am very pleased with the results. No more one tire spins and almost as important I was able to get up the hill to my house when the road was covered with ice and snow this year.
A new trans cooler is a good idea when your rebuilding one. The old stock one in my van was beat to hell so it couldn't have been to efficient.
