Body and Paint

Like every other domestic in the late 80s and early 90s Chryslers had paint problems and my van wasn't an exception (see Just bought section). Not only was it peeling but the last owner had a done half assed paint job on the hood and roof that didn't even match and was peeling again. It was alot worse than in those pics after I had washed it a few times. I stripped the hood down to bare medal and did my best on the upper parts of the fenders and passenger side door. I then primed and painted them using Plasticoat spray paint who luckly had an real close match to the original color.

I also yanked off most of the fake wood paneling, haven't done the tailgate yet. I wouldn't have bothered but the wood and molding were beat up and I like the vans better without it. It was deffinatly not a fun job. Getting the molding off was easy but the wood was a big pain in the ass. I had to heat it up with a blow dryer and slowing pull off as much as I could. Getting the sticker residue off was even worse. I ended up using mineral spirits and some other chemicals to soften it up and scraping it off with a big ice scrapper. That scratched it up a little but they are real small scratches and compared to what the rest of the van looks like you won't notice them.

I also painted the grill to match and shaved the hood ornament to give it a meaner look. As mean as a minivan can look anyway.

The difference in paint shows up a lot better in that pic than it does in person. I have an air compressor now so maybe in the future I'll take a shot at giving it a real paint job but for now this is good enough.
