COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed primarily for public and private school teachers who possess reasonably good computer skills.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The major objectives of this course are to provide students with experiences and skill development in:
1. Applying productivity tools for creating multimedia presentations.
2. Using computers to support problem solving, data collection, information management, communications, and decision making.
3. Observing demonstrations or use of broadcast instruction, audio/video conferencing, and other distance learning applications.
4. Research and use of technology in specific content areas.
5. Creating a set of subject related bookmarks on the internet.
6. Using electronic mail and web browser applications to support specific curriculum objectives.
7. Using productivity tools to improve teaching and learning in the content areas.
8. Identifying, selecting and integrating video and other varying forms of communications technology to improve learning in the content areas.
9. Participating in collaborative projects and team activities using appropriate technologies.
10. Demonstration in the use of technology resources in specific curriculum areas that support instruction for students with special needs.
11. Exploring, evaluating, and using computer/technology resources including applications, tools, educational software and associated documentation.
12. Practicing responsible, ethical and legal use of technology, information, and software resources.
GRADING:
Proficient completion (as determined by the instructor) of the following ten items will be sufficient to obtain a grade of A:
1. Become proficient at using PowerPoint. Students will make a presentation demonstrating various features of Power Point. The Power Point presentation will be burned to a CD and must contain your voice recorded on at least one slide, 3-D headings, scanned photographs, graphics – some created on your own and some copied from the internet, automatic timing on at least three slides, music playing on at least three slides, hyperlinks to other Power Point presentations, hyperlinks to your Web page and other Web pages, hyperlinks to other slides, hyperlinks to videos – some created by you and some from the internet, text appearing on the screen in a variety of ways – a letter at a time, a word at a time, a whole paragraph at a time, and include various sounds from the internet – you may want to try – http://www.a1freesoundeffects.com/cartoon.html.
A copy of the CD will be given to the instructor and he will keep it on file.
2. Create a Home Page and then add a page for bookmarks with a minimum of 50 bookmarks in one or more content area(s). Some of the bookmarks may be placed under a heading of “Miscellaneous.”
3. Develop a resume’ and place it on your Home Page.
4. Develop a Family Page and place it on your Home Page.
5. Summarize (must be typed) and discuss six technology related articles. At least one of the articles must be related to instruction for students with special needs. You will discuss the articles in class.
6. You are to research a minimum of 10 search engines and summarize what you find about each search engine.
7. Become familiar with using a word processing program, a data base program, and a spreadsheet program.
The word processing assignment must contain the following features: columns, horizontal and vertical lines, headers/footers, drop cap letters, different font sizes, page numbering, textart/wordart, subscripts, superscripts, bullets and special characters.
8. Complete a Newsletter for a school/organization.
9. Complete a Brochure for a school/organization.
10. Become proficient at using the digital camera and the
scanner. This includes taking a digital picture and placing it on your homepage and inserting pictures into a Power Point presentation.
Students who do not receive a proficient grade on any of the 10 items above will be given one chance to remediate their work to a proficient level. Any student who is not able to remediate their work on the first try will receive a grade of B or C – depending upon the quality of the remediated work. A grade of C will be given to students who are not able to remediate their work on the second attempt.
