A Marshall journalism graduate student has succeeded the university's president - at least in television.

Melanie Chapman, a Marshall graduate, has been selected to host MU Report's "Headliners," a biweekly show broadcast on Marshall's channel 25.

Traditionally, Marshall's president hosted "Headliners," but Dr. Keith Spears, vice president of communications and marketing, said the program needed a new face.

"Dr. Kopp felt that having a student, especially a grad student, as host of the program would broaden the scope," he said. "It gives her an opportunity to broaden her scope while it provides greater objectivity."

Chapman, who is from Logan, W.Va., received her Bachelor of Arts in broadcast journalism in December 2005. She is now studying public relations and is the first student ever to host "Headliners."

Chapman said the university was primarily looking for a graduate student to host the show.

"The entire production staff for 'Headliners' had a meeting one day and suggested several people and my name came up," Chapman said. "Having this opportunity is very beneficial to me while I'm still in school. I have a lot of background in radio and now I'll get some professional experience in television."

Spears said Dr. Stephen Kopp, Marshall University president, still plans to make appearances on the show.

"President Kopp will be on there often," he said. "He will not be guiding the discussion, but will have a great deal of input when he's on there."

Kopp did appear on the first episode of "Headliners," helping to outline agenda for Marshall.

Todd McCormick, Marshall's videographer, works as a reporter for "Headliners."

He said the show is still structured much in the same fashion as prior episodes, with exception to the new host.

"The show provides a unique perspective of what goes on at Marshall," McCormick said.

The first episode of the new semester "was a work in progress," Chapman said.

"The show will continue to grow," she said. "We (the production staff) have already learned so much about each other, and we've learned a lot about what works for the show too. I'm looking forward to working on the next show so I can improve and help make a better product for Marshall, and for myself and my future career."

While "Headliners" is a biweekly show, it airs daily on Marshall's channel 25 at 9:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. The program is also available online at www.marshall.edu/headliners
